Canceling a suspended Gym Membership

Hi,
I've suspended my gym membership and now I want to cancel but apparently it's going to cost me a full months membership. I'm cancelling because it's not practical for me to go any more.
Any advise on avoiding the months fees they request? One of the reasons I'm leaving is because they keep increasing the fees because of 'new developments' which is pretty weak really because they only put in a place to park my bike.
Thanks.

I have canceled a few gym memberships in my time and unfortunately they do request a months notice so as you have been suspended for a while they will insist on a months payment for you to cancel it. There's no way round it i'm afraid, it will show as an unpaid bill against you if you don't!
I had canceled a membership one time with a gym and didn't pay the last month as I was broke (just canceled the direct debit), my credit was shot to pieces anyway so I didn't notice if there was a problem against me - when I got myself sorted (about two years later ) I decided to re join the same gym as a new member - they still had the unpaid amount on their system  which they said I had to pay if I wanted to join, so better just paying it to ensure no monies are showing un paid against you.
Sorry it wasn't better news!0 -
in my opinion as much as i needed the gym i feel that they are heartless moneymaking beasts! i remember when i joined my gym i SPECIFICALLY asked if i will have to give notice when leaving and the lady said no, just tell us and thats it....fast forward 6months later and having never stepped into the gym and having paid for all those months i finally decided to cancel the membership (it was end month) and the SAME lady told me it's common sense that you need to give 30 days notice to cancel the gym membership. I was mad as hell! . and of course got charged again.
Furthermore i had to make 2 unnecessary trips there, first time round she tells me thanks for telling us we'll cancel it...calls me up a few days later and tells me i have to come to the gym to sign a form. After signing that form i vowed i'll spread the word to everyone i know to avoid that gym like the plague!0
