I have been using the large size rigid plastic ones for years but feel the spikes on the bottom leave a mess on the carpet below. So I have taken the mat up and now find my PC chair is leaving rut marks on the carpet. I can't win and so wonder what others do?

We just got a cheap rug from Argos, seems to be working well, though I think the carpet under there is now cleaner than the rest of the room...0

If you have spikes on your bottom then you are doing something wrong (sorry couldn't resist)
Anything with pressure will make an imprint on the carpet, so if you want to reduce that you need pretty heavy duty rubber matting.
I have a thin (ish) plastic thing I think we got from IKEA and it does well, but then we have bare floor boards - no carpet0 -
Cheap rug from Aldi.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
