I have rented loads of places privately and through agents and never heard of that before. They have all done it no problem. Most of the time they have just asked for work and personal reference. I would just give him the contact detials for your new landlord and see if he bothers to contact him or if you get charged. The worse that could happen is your be £25 worse off.0

To my mind, this kind of charge just demonstrates the desire of some LLs to have their cake and eat it. There is another thread on this board about the sharing of tenants personal information. The LL's bleat on about the need to protect their investment/revenue stream etc etc, then some of the very same LLs are here saying that making a charge to another LL trying to protect their investment is perfectly reasonable. As is fairly typical, LLs seem to want it both ways and, as per usual, it's the poor tenant who takes the financial hit. £25 to answer the phone and tell another prospective LL that tenant "A" paid their rent and didn't trash the place is, frankly, profiteering. LLs already charge far too much as an admin fee anyway. Surely referencing should be part of theat. As soon as the money grabbers realise that they are just circulating the same charge among thermselves, it will stop being charged. LLs need to decide whether they are trying to prevent bad tenancies or turning a profit from referencing.0

You could make a subject access agreement under the Data Protection Act for a copy of all information the landlord holds about you, which would include a full list of all rental payments made, for £10. It would cost the landlord far more time to comply with that than to give you a 'to whom it may concern' letter.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
