Faulty Panasonic Viera LCD TV

We bought a 37" Panasonic Viera TV from Currys in July 2008 (so less than 2 years ago). Did not take out their 'Whatever Happens' insurance, as we thought that spending £700 on a TV should last for a reasonable amount of time. Not a chance! It has now developed a fault, but as it is not in guarantee it cannot be repaired for free. We quoted the Sales of Good Act to the member of the staff in the shop, but we were just told to report it to head office. Has anyone else had this problem with Currys? Any info on what I should do next will be gratefully received. Thank you for reading this post.

Put your case in writing. Force the retailer to put their refusal to help in writing.
When they've done that you may need to get an independent report confirming the fault is inherent.
Others will pad this out with more detail, Im sure.

Thanks for your response KeithP, I've never had this sort of problem before so am not au fait with Consumer Rights. It's certainly opened my eyes to a whole new world!

I'm sure there were some letters posted on Martin's Money website that can be used in cases like this.
I've just had a quick look and can't find them anymore.

The engineers report cost me £47 and I've had a response back from Curry's offering £388, giving me a total of £341 to spend on a new TV (with Curry's obviously). I''ve done my sums and after taking off 2 years depreciation AND adding the cost of the report have come to a figure of £547, which is over £150 more than Curry's offer.
What do you 'experts' out there think? Should I accept their offer or fight for more money? There's no way I'll get such a high spec 37" TV from Curry's for £341.00 surely?

The idea is that you have had nearly two years use of the thing so the refund is reduced by 'a suitable amount'. Currys have suggested (not in so many words) that a two year old secondhand equivalent tv would cost you £341.00.
You are expected to add something to that to buy a new tv.
The real question is...
Is £341.00 a suitable amount?
We don't know the spec of your old tv, but the cheapest 37" Panasonic tv that Currys are selling is £548.97.
If that tv matches yours, then they are deducting around £100 per year.

Don't forget if they're leaving the TV in your hands then you still have the option of looking at getting it repaired with that £341. That might be more feasible then buying a new replacement?0
