terraced house - infill extension

Hi,
We have a victorian mid terraced house and have been looking at building an extension in the infill. The infill is about 4m deep and I am trying to work out if the 3m for permitted extenions starts from the deep part of the infill or the back of the house?
Also if it started at the back of the house, would that mean we could build an extension 3m beyond the end of the property? Total space would be much less than 50% of the original house size and the infill is only 2m wide.
Have spoken to the planning office and am now just more confused! Any clarity or where I can find out once and for all would be great!!
Thanks
Chris
