Artistic teenager-inspiration needed!!!

Hi Everyone!

I was hoping you could help my very enthusiatic (and artistic) DD [17]. She is on study leave at the moment and is desperate to earn a little extra cash. As we live in a village it's really hard to get part-time employment so I had the idea she should make something to sell to her friends and that I may also try and sell for her.

It needs to be cheap, relatively quick to make and trendy?
I've come up with a few ideas but was wondering if anyone here has anything to add???

Hair Accessories (slides, bands, grips etc)
Jewellery (bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings etc)
Painted shot glasses (lots of 18th birthdays coming up)
Decorated notebooks

Has anybody got any ideas/links/sites to give us much needed inspiration? I've trawled through pages of this site today and it's helped enormously-thank you one and all!!!;)

X

Is she any good at painting?

She could get some cheap canvases (home bargains or pound land) and some paint and do some funky designs. If she's 17 it's possible some of her friends are soon going to uni and may want to buy these for a few pounds to decorate their rooms.

Doesn't need to be anything amazing, splashes of colour on a white canvas look great!

She could make these out of Fimo http://www.folksy.com/items/339289--Cupcake-Chram-Bracelet?shop=yes

she could make all manner of things and maybe hold a jewellery party or sell some at any local craft fairs. Fimo is cheap to buy off ebay, and the list of stuff you can make is endless.

  • What a lovely idea. My sister sometimes sells stuff on Etsy, and there's always loads of inspiration on there :)

Can she use a sewing machine?
My daughter recently paid nearly £40 :eek::eek: for a simple "tube" of sheer polycotton! I am making her another one, many rows of shirring elastic across the boob area and then stitch up the side-Seeemples!
I reckon its costing me about a tenner to make but economies of scale would come into play if you made more.Could probably sell to friends for about £17 - £20.
They are very popular "with the young ones" this summer. I think I'll also do a Maxi version.

Thanks for all the great ideas!!!!
The painting idea is especially good as she is really artistic. I didn't realise the pound shop would sell canvases!!!
Artytarty have you a photo of your creation-i'm not sure what you mean?

    Thanks again everyone X

Without wanting to be a killjoy - if she's on study leave, shouldn't she actually be studying and shouldn't you be encouraging her to do so?

We have a 99p store here which sells canvases in packs of four for 99p. If you have one like that, might be worth a look :)

Thanks lovetomake. I might try there.

Oldernotwiser-sorry but my DD has one exam left for which she studies many hours each day. Her money making scheme would be in her free time and i'm encouraging her to use her free time wisely! Thank you for your concern.

She is trying the painting idea first. So hopefully once she done a few the orders will come rolling in! It's also something she can put in her portfolio for Uni!

    Thanks again x

Just had another idea! Does she have a camera? Maybe she could take photographs of peoples' pets for them for a small fee?
