We are obliged to make a payment on account after 14 days if you have provided all that we need. However, in practice, if they have a backlog, they will be working on this in date order.

If you contact and ask for a payment on account, they have to make it but sometimes I find that just making a nuisance of yourself means that you go to the front of the queue, sometimes in front of others who are in the same situation but have been waiting longer.

It can take weeks! It took around 7 weeks in all for our first LHA amount to come through. I already knew it could take ages so made sure I had enough money for 2 months living - including rent - in my account just incase after moving costs, money owed etc. I know that probably doesn't help you as you probably don't have any savings like most that need to claim :(. The only reason I had so much money in my account was a back date of DLA that landed in there in one go!

We didn't have anything they should have disputed as we had given them everything but they found something somehow that they didn't like. It got sorted and it still took them ages after that to put the money into my account. I bet they have people looking through your claim with a fine toothcomb like they did with ours. Anything to slow it down or find out you are not entittled to it and they will try and/or find it!

I know I shouldn't take offence but I do sometimes!

I work in HB and I am good at my job. This means applying the HB regs to all claims and checking that the benefit award is correct. If this means that some people think that I am being picky or looking at things with a fine toothed comb, then so be it.

However, in my LA, we process claims that come in with everything that we need, in 45 minutes. Why would we want to slow down the process and get all the negativity that comes with that? I have had people tell me they are going to kill themselves and it will be my fault because they haven't got the form in when they should have.

Some LA's are better than others but it is just not fair to type general statements about 'people' in HB / CTB.

The processing time varies significantly in different areas, but I would be inclined to warn your new LL of the possible delay, or if possible, try to set aside some contingency funds.

Good luck with your move. ;)
