Hey all, I am so clueless when it comes to reading the electric meter, I so wish it was a digital one.

I took a photo of the meter when I first moved in which is here (moved in April 2009 on good friday)

Photo088.jpg

Now i always get confused with how to read it some websites say if its passed a number then right down the lower number, but then some have arrows telling you which way that one moves anc tell you to write the one its passed

For example on my picture

The lower number is 2, but on this website http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/my-account/how-to-read-your-electricity-meter.shtml if you follow the arrow then the first number would be a 3?

Can someone help me read the first photo?

If you got off the lowest number thoery picture one it reads 22217 but if you go off the arrows on the above website it reads 33328

And this is a one I've just taken now

Photo212.jpg

Lowest number theory 25562 but using the arrows on the website above its 36662

Now the bill which shows a estimate dated 20/4/10 has electirc as 36198 (obv a month has passed since they made the bill but it just came this morning)

Help lol

I hope this post makes sense

Each of the dials turns in the opposite direction and if the point is near a number you look at the next digit to determine the value.

In the top photo the reading is 22217.
In the bottom photo the reading is 25561, despite the angle of the picture I can tell the 4th digits is a 6 because the arrow is almost on the 6 but the next dial is between 1 and 2 which means it has just gone past ...60

In the link the pointer is between 4 and 5 and the arrow shows the numbers increase clockwise and therefore the value should be 4. Dont see how you think it should be 3 when reading your meter as the number increase anticlockwise.

    First one : 22217

    Second one: 25561

Your consumption increases! It should never go back. Pointers move from lower to higher numbers (!) but the dials do alternate clockwise/anticlockwise.

The tens unit on the second reading is difficult to read from the angle of your picture - I am guessing it is a 6 rather than a 5 in just the same way as if it were an hour hand and the units dial were a minute hand.

    Top 22217
    Bottom 25561

You read the number the pointer has passed.

As everyone states above the readings are 22217 and 25561.

However I would be very concerned about getting a bill with an estimate of 36198. That means a bill in the region of £1,500 for a year.

Have you misread the meter and fed in the incorrect reading to EDF during the past year?

Is this the first bill since April 09? How much are you paying? It should be in the region of £30 a month(£360 a year)

    This gets even more confusing.

The final meter reading for the old occupant must be the same as the initial meter reading for the new occupant.

If you gave them a reading of 33238(your incorrect interpretation of the initial meter reading) and EDF have accepted that reading, they must have over-billed the previous occupant by 11,000kWh - some £1,200!!

    This needs sorting out.

You would think so. But I get the impression that the billing systems are possibly so cut down that they might lack the basic sanity checks to ensure that the closing reading of one occupier matches the opening reading of the next.
