Just bought a second hand car from dealer

Options
I just bought a 54 plate corsa from a small dealer where i live. its under 30 day warranty and i would just like to know where i stand on the following and if there is any documents online which i can print off and take into the dealers to prove i am in the right. any help much appreciated as i dont know much about motors.X

1 - I was given one key only for the car and its supposed to be remote central locking as stated in vehicle description when i seen motor in parking lot but i have to put key into lock to open it and the metal key is coming away from plastic holder

2 - the light above driver in motor has no bulb and the material roof is hanging slightly.

3 - the engine isnt ticking over properly my friend said it sounds like it hasnt been serviced and im having to rev it a bit just so it doesnt stall my friend told me it shouldnt be doing this for age and mileage(52K) of motor.

i phoned dealer yesterday and got the ''warranty only covers engine etc'' so would like to know if anyone has any help as taking motor to dealers on friday

  • When does the service book say it was last serviced? Date and mileage and dealer.

Try a new bulb in the light. Might work. If not then further electrics investigation req.

To be honest second hand cars are really sold as seen, although you might get somewhere if it was a big dealer and not a shoddy place. You should always check the car at first and again before you pay the final balance. Not much help now I know, sorry.

You can check the MOT history online with the vehicle reg & V5 document number. VOSA website I think. However I don't think that will help your arguement.

Does the car actually have remote central locking or just central locking? When you use the key in the lock, does it unlock all the doors? I don't think there is any requirement for a dealer to supply you with more than one key, unless they have agreed to it. The Corsa remote key is a rectangular fob with the open/lock buttons on it and should look like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-CORSA-MERIVA-AGILA-REMOTE-ALARM-KEY-FOB-type2-/370373412489?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item563bf9c689

If it's a key with a rounded top like this then it is likely to be the spare key. Most Corsas only came with one remote key:

2 - the light above driver in motor has no bulb and the material roof is hanging slightly.

Should be easy enough to fit a new bulb in. On Corsas the interior light can be controlled by pushing in the main headlamp switch. Maybe the roof lining needs to be clipped in properly.
3 - the engine isnt ticking over properly my friend said it sounds like it hasnt been serviced and im having to rev it a bit just so it doesnt stall my friend told me it shouldnt be doing this for age and mileage(52K) of motor.

Sounds like the dealer is talking crap. If the engine is stalling then there is an engine fault that he needs to look at.

the key does have the open and lock buttons on it like you described and the vehicle description from the dealers info clearly stated remote central locking, my friend is a techie and has taken the key apart but cant find any fault with circuit board etc hes even put a new battery in and it wont work unless i actually put key in lock and turn it then the metal starts coming away from holder. thanks for all the adviceX

If the battery has died and not been replaced it is likely that the key will need to be recoded to make it work with your car.

To check if the remote is working simply go to your local corner shop, see if it has CCTV and if it does and you can see both CCTV camera and monitor point the remote to the camera and press and hold either button.

If it's working you will see it light up like a torch on the monitor.

As for your mate being a techie is this like everyone who has a mate 'thats good with computers'?

The above test is simple and takes seconds!! If it doesnt work check that your 'techie' mate has put the right battery in, just because it's the same size doesnt mean it's the same one....

If it does flash but doesnt unlock the door it may mean that it has lost its code for the car. Google it and the answer will appear!!

Isn't that for infra-red remotes which are now rare? Most remotes use the 433Mhz radio frequency which is why they are susceptible to interference from transmitters.

Edit: Just checked Mrs V's Corsa key and it's a radio remote.

Get it back to the dealer to sort the engine. That is the main concern.

Engine isint ticking over correctly...? Let me guess - its the 1.0 or 1.2 with the 3 cylinder engine? they never sound nice but they run perfectly well.

If you take it along to harvey he'll speed the idle up to a couple of thousand rpm for you as well.

To answer the question though, the dealer should be obliged to fix all the points for you, keep a copy of the advert if you have one, if it mentions central locking.
