holiday packing -5kg - what to take?

I'm going on hol in Aug for a week and only have 5kg hand luggage allowance (£16 each way for 20kg = not very money saving)

Just wondering what basics to take. I was thinking:

2 x shorts
1 x jeans (wear to airport)
2 x dresses
2 x linen pants
5 x day time tops
2 x night time tops
2 x bikinis

or is tht too much in a 5kg suitcase? thanks!

    No knickers?
    Planning on going commando? :rotfl:

It depends if it's a dressy place or not.
Will you be doing a lot of sightseeing during the day or spending most of the time lazing by the pool or on the beach?
If sightseeing, maybe an extra pair of shorts.
If lazing, will you really need 5 daytime tops?
Maybe a sarong instead of one or two of the tops.

You can wear each dress twice and trousers/tops twice so that gives you 8 nightly options, which sounds fine - make sure the tops are interchangeable with the trousers so you get 4 different looks.
    Top 1 with trouser 1
    Top 1 with trouser 2
    Top 2 with trouser 1
    Top 2 with trouser 2

Wear your heavier sandals or trainers to travel and pack a couple of pair of dressy flat sandals.

Do a practice pack to see if you can fit everything in AND don't forget to weigh your case.
If you're over, you might have to put it into the hold - and at the airport that will cost you much more than the £16.

Also, make sure your luggage is within the airline dimensions.
Check the website for that, it does differ.
I'm not sure I could fit all I wanted for 1 week into the hand luggage size for Thomas Cook.

Finally, don't forget that some airlines insist on ONE piece of hand luggage per person, so you'd have to put your handbag, camera, travel documents, make up etc into your hand luggage.

Just wear all the clothes you want to take.

You might get a few funny looks... but think of the money you are saving!

5Kg is not a lot, but it's doable if you are prepared to pack VERY light!
I think you can drop at least 3 or 4 of the tops - you can wash one or two through midway through hol and you don't need a different one each day!! Do you *really* need day & night tops - what about eliminating the night-tops & taking plain coloured tops that are suitable for day/night and a couple of fab necklaces or a scarf instead to dress them up?
    Underwear? Sleepwear? Beach cover-up?
I think you will need a pair of sandals/flipflops (or buy there?)
I assume that you will travel in jeans, trainers, long sleeved shirt (useful for covering up in evening/sunburn) with T-shirt under it (there's one of your tops!), light jacket (evenings/rain), chunky bracelets/necklaces ...

Will the 100ml of liquid allow you to take enough suncream or are you planning to buy there?

you don't say where you are going - some places can be very pricey for toiletries & suntan products ( I see there are no toiletries at all in your list!)
I usually buy all the heavy stuff ( suntan products, shampoo & conditioner, toothpaste, etc) at Boots at the airport, after security - does not count as your 5kgs allowance because in the duty-free - and leave any unused products behind when I return.

I would get the case, pack it with what you have suggested and weigh it, then proceed from there. It is more than enough in my opinion - although I do take a clean pair of knickers for each day! I would probably only take one dress, one pair of trousers and one evening top, but I don't tend to stay in the same place so don't mind wearing the same outfit for dinner more than once.

who are you flying with, are you going on your own.
  • I once saw very pi++ed off airport security make a couple take all their clothes off down to the final layer because they were wearing 4/5 pairs of jeans and tops each = must have been uncomfortable but can be done!! Just try to look normal so they don't put you through the ordeal they put the couple through.

Does anyone know can I put an empty handbag folded up in my coat pocket and then unfold it when through and do he same again when getting on plane?? Its a light over the shoulder pouch but I really need to take it but my case is full to bursting. Is it also true that I can take anything I can carry in my coat pocket , books, shoes etc??

Am flying on sunday and am starting to realise that 10 kg hand luggage for someone who took 18 pairs of shoes last year for a weeks holiday might not have been realistic!!!
