Hi, not as weird as it sounds!
I am looking at putting together some information materials for non english speakers around health awareness.
Pictures dont always work, and not everyone reads, so I was thinking about getting some native speakers to record some information/questions onto a device like an MP3 and this could be used with the individuals.
Does this make sense? Can anyone help at all please?
many thanks, and sorry if its in the wrong place! Its a technie question for me....

You can. Most MP3 players have a voice record.
However, the microphones and sound quality are quite basic, and wouldn't be very good for much more than memos to yourself.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

If you have a computer with microphone then you can record directly onto your hard disc with "Sound Recorder" built into Windows, then transfer the recording to whatever accessory you want.

I think the question is - what do you want to do with the recordings once you have them?
Do you want to distribute them to these non-English speakers on CD, memory stick, or other storage? Do you want to host them on a website? Do you want to play them to these people on the same mp3 device?

Most mp3 players have voice recording. I have a demo of a voice recording that I did on my mp3 player:

(That should be angel fire all one word).
Files are recorded as .wav files. You would need sound editing software like NCH Wavepad to turn them into mp3 so they take up less space. Save the recordings using 32-112 kbps.
For better sound quality using a PC/netbook, https://www.amazon.co.uk have decent cheap microphones - some of them have noise-cancelling to remove unwanted noise. Do an electronics search for 'PC microphone'.
NCH Wavepad can be used to record sound - use 44,100hz for recording. It's user friendly.0
