Virgin want to update my email

Options
I've had a message from Virgin my internet provider. They want me to click on Install to do some fixes to my email.

I started following their instructions and then received this message:
24 May 2010
Hello
This information is important if you use an email program like Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird to access your email.
Due to an upgrade to our email service, you need to make a few small changes to make sure your email program keeps working. We have created a tool to do this for you automatically, or you can make the changes manually if you prefer.
Running the tool here only takes a few seconds, and you don't need to stop what you're doing or re-boot your PC. However, you need to be on your home PC for these changes to take effect in Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird. Making these changes will ensure that you won't have problems sending and receiving emails in the future, when we switch off some of our old email systems.
Sorting out your email settings

This page will fix your email settings with just one click, and make sure that you can continue to send and receive email.
But it also said:-

Your email client will be closed for this to work so please ensure you've saved any emails.

I hope this does not mean I am going to lose all the emails in my inbox and other boxes I have created.

Can someone confirm it is safe to go ahead please? Thanks

Your email client will be closed (by their software, not manually) for this to work (their software) so please ensure you've saved any emails

i.e. closing your email client from outside forces it to close, and if you have any part-composed, incomplete e-mails that you've been drafting, you won't get a dialog box saying "You've got an e-mail here - are you SURE you want to close this program without saving it?" The incomplete e-mail would therefore be lost.

I think that's what they're driving at, and I would hope that their update won't be messing with your stored mailboxes...... but.....

Are you both sure that the email is genuine? It looks very suspicious to me. I wouldn't run the program without checking on their website. And don't click on any link provided in the email. Type Virgin's address manually into the address bar in your browser.

Edit: If the email is genuine, then I find it quite irresponsible to do it this way. Next time people will click on a phishing email...

The right way would have been to tell people to log in onto their Virgin account, where the link to the program should be visible.

Yes, I agree. The page does advise people who are wary to go to the Virgin Media website if they are in doubt and get to the page that way but it might serve to confuse people as you say,

I have an NTLworld email address with VirginMedia. I haven't received this email - but then, I haven't received any emails downloaded to Thunderbird for about two weeks now, it keeps throwing up a POP error. I've checked on VM site, and they've changed the POP settings for these accounts; but I've updated my details to what they say and it still doesn't work.

If any of you have received this email and it contains a link to VM site to find this widget, can you post the link here for me? Thanks. It might put things right.

I don't think it's live yet. Would be better keeping your old settings until your email definitely has went to the new pop server.

    Tronator, yes it's genuine.

Tigsteroonie. I don't know about thunderbird but on outlook u should change the pop and smtp servers to pop3.blueyonder.co.uk

Well it's still working for me at the moment. There is no date to tell us when it goes live.

I found the widget eventually (don't make this easy, do they?). It didn't solve the problem. Searching on VM support forum, it seems that there are many many others with similar NTLworld email account problems, irrespective of client used - like me, some cannot even see emails on the webmail system.

Flippin' good job I don't use the NTLworld account for much, isn't it? Only thing I use it for is Library Renewals and my VM Billing. Now, I wonder if I could refuse to pay my VM bills because I'm not receiving them because their email system is bolloxed? ;)

All working fine here with Blueyonder email accounts!

@Tigseroonie . did you check the port no. is set to 995 and connection security to SSL/TLS? .. not sure if that would make a difference , but worth checking ..

I would be very suspicious of anything that wanted to do something with any email client, as someone else said, are you 100% possitive this is a genuine thing, if not then you could be installing a security nightmare.
