Debit card details stolen! Now in Debt!

Went to ATM this afternoon and could not withdraw money. Camehome to check online and sure enough there was no money in my account.
I rang the bank and the took details and went through all the transactions and over £1000 has been taken.
I only have a £50 overdraft on my account but my account has been able to go to over £300 into the red beyond the £50 overdraft. How can the bank let this happen.
Its being looked into by the fraud team but how do I stand getting all my money back? what about the overdrawn overdraft???
Im on IS and any money going into my account will be swallowed up also my direct debits are all due to go out on the 1st ...... where do I get the money from to pay thos ????
Any help and advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

All I can think of is to ask the bank to grant you a temporary overdraft increase to the value of the "disputed" amount - this should effectively restore you to the situation you were in before this money was taken and should mean that your payments don't collapse while they are investigating.
I'm (only slightly) surprised the bank didn't suggest this themselves.
(Presumably your card has now been cancelled)0 -
What bank is it? If its HSBC then your money will be returned but only after they drag their feet whilst they carry out their 'investigations'.
Call them up and complain about the overdraft fees, etc. If they dont refund them then make a lot of noise.0 -
the banking code defines that you can only be charged a maximim of £50, up to the point you tell them its been stolen. After that the risk is theirs.
(assuming they cant show its fraudulent)

oops - thanks Mikeyorks
meant to say as long as they cant show fraud by the OP.

I have done so today, got myself a CI# but just had a nice phonecall from WPC who basically said ther is absolutly nothing they can do as the just dont have the resources all she could do was advice me not to us my debit card online again :-( Bang goes all those bargains I find on the grabit board :-(
So its up to the bank. The fraud dept will soon see that all the transactions were made online via Switzerland and refund me my money. Unless they try to accuse me of being Superwoman, then I'm damd . LOLMSE:-)MoneySpendingExpert (-:0 -

That's how banks work, they let you go over drawn, even past your overdraft facility.
Even if you never plan to go overdrawn it is always sensible to get as large a overdraft facility as possible, just in case.
As you have found the £50 overdraft wasn't enough, because your balance was taken further below.
When using a debit card it's only usually payments over £50 that the system checks that there are funds available, some don't check at higher amounts, so payments will come out of your account even if that takes you overdrawn or past your overdraft. Same way as when DDs come out they can take you overdrawn.
Don't think for a minute an overdraft of £50 means it will stop you going overdrawn. Best to get a much much higher overdraft to be on the safe side, but run the account as though you have no overdraft facility.
I think the bank should decide not to charge you for taking your overdrawn when the reason for you being overdrawn is due to someone else committing fraud. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

I am hopeing that too, I will be one angry person if they do!
I have had the £50 overdraft for many years and never ever used it, its purely there just incase.MSE:-)MoneySpendingExpert (-:0
