due to the heat yesterday i am going to purchase a portable air conditioner. venting through a door or window isnt really an option, so i am going to vent externally.
i have a relative who is a joiner and can easily drill the hole through the wall. what do i do about making it weatherproof for the winter? in winter i would remove the air con unit to save space, and obviously there would be a hole the size of the vent hose. any ideas?

If you fit one of these to the outside of the wall it will stop the wind and rain coming in;

You can also get them with a cover if it's for an exposed wall, this'll help to stop the wind rattling the flaps.
A lot of AC units come with a cap which fits in the hole on the inside of the house so you don't have to look at a hole in the wall.

Where are you going to place the portable air conditioner? Bearing in mind that the compressor is built in and it is LOUD when its turned on. Once the temperature of the air has cooled, the compressor will turn on and off, trying to maintain the desired temperature and this is very very irrating and annoying.0 -
hi, it would be going in our dining room. noise is no issue as it is primarily to keep pets cool rather than us, and wouldnt be needed at night. we will be out during the day when it is on so noise is no issue0

Very lucky pets!! Do they get a shiatsu massage very now and then?:D0 -
If you want air con get a proper fixed unit. They are far better more efficient to run and (if you have relative who can DIY) not that much more expensive than a portable"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
