dark pc screen

ive got a packard bell imedia mc1538 computer with a samsung syncmaster 713bm moniter. over the past couple of days when i start the pc up the screen is dark you can still see the words but its like the contrast has been turned down. after about 15 minutes it goes ok on its own then dark again then ok again. ive played with the colour settings but it just stays the same. then i swapped the moniter over for a old one i have and its still the same. does anyone have any ideas of what else i can try.
