goggle,
might be worth starting a new thread, can you post a picture? The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

the fact that they are quite energetic is quite important, the chances are you have biscuit beetle (having double checked in my insect books)- stegobium pancieum
google 'biscuit beetle' and see what you think to the pictures.
I had an arguement with my local environmental health dept 3 weeks ago about these, they were adamant that they were common furniture beetle (what people call woodworm) and I said they were biscuit beetle (correctly)
have a look here http://www.walsall.gov.uk/index/environment/pest_control/biscuit_beetle.htm
good luck
Thanks dampdaveski, they certainly look like biscuit beetles. I did look at those originally but as it's my living room there's no food kept in there so I can't understand where they're coming from!?
My OH said they were wood worm originally, but having looked at the pictures I don't think they are either. At least I hope not!! :eek:0 -

They can easily spread all over the place to be honest, the job I was involved in had them crawling all over the 1st floor bedrooms, might be worth calling your local authority environmental health dept, they might treat it for you.
'woodworm' beetles are very docile and only really move around when they get very warm
