dog sneezing?

Do dogs suffer from Hayfever?, never known a dog sneeze so much as my 11 yr old Bichon is doing just lately. Can't find anything to finger it, I have had dogs all my life and never have any of these had this 'allergy' if thats what it is.

I don't know about hayfever but they can have allergies. Mum's old dog (border terrier) was allergic to grass seed and used to get sore pads during the summer when he was out and about in the fields so she used to have to put a cream on to treat it. My big dog kind of sneezes every now and then, to be honest I have never given it a second thought - other than perhaps I need to get the dusting done!

If it is happening a lot, I would suggest a quick word with your vet - I would imagine there are doggy anti-histamines available if necessary.

Mutt's sneezing her head off at the moment. It's not worrying her so I'm leaving her to it for now - felt a bit sorry for her when her nose bounced off the floor coz she sneezed so hard, but she didn't seem to notice. (Where there's no sense, and all that. :rotfl:)
If you're worried, get onto the vet as Caffca suggested.

they do, mine get allergies in the summer and ends up witn bald patches. the vet recommended prititon (4mg stuff), just 1 a day, it did seeem to work. Her word "£10 for a week supply from me or a fiver from boots, its the same stuff".

Mine had a sneezing fit some years ago, it was so bad she actually had a drop of blood on her nose so we whipped her to the vet for an anti histimine injection.

OR she may have a grass seed or something up her nose, so do take her to the vet if this doesnt stop quickly.

Will try that, hope it works, it dos'nt bother him at all, it's just such an odd thing as I have never known it before!

my dad buys the generic version of piriton for his dog - I think it works out at 4p a day. It does need to be the same stuff as piriton though, not piritize or any of the other antihistamines, as some are not dog safe... ask your vet - its probably worth ringing them just to see if they are happy for you to try piriton, and check the generic name!

Piriton as others have said or Benalyn is good to use. You can also smear a small amount of vasaline around the nose that helps.

Dogs can have allergies to pollen just like us. But, if she's sneezing regularly it's probably best to get her checked over by a vet.

It's possible to buy a tub of 500 Piriton tablets online for under a tenner, probably with P&P on top of that. My dogs get irritated pads during the pollen season, so will lie there quietly nibbling away until the skin between their pads is red raw. I find that the Piriton does help them.

I should add, when this first happened, I did go to the vet and he prescribed Piriton.

Yep my wee pooch takes piriton in the summer, he has allergies and has regular injections so sometimes he needs the piriton as a top up. Always check for offers in boots and ask for boots own brand tablets as opposed to actual Piriton...same stuff but cheaper!:D

Its called chlorphenamine maleate 4 mg
