TVs, Games consoles, and Hz refresh rate confusion

We're looking at replacing our TV, and have found one that's pretty much ideal.
Only problem is, it's got a 50hz refresh rate, and I know from experience that some games require a 60hz tv (due to owning a Gamecube in the past, and having to play Rogue Squadron in black and white
).
My question is, will a PS3 and 360 work on a 50hz tv? They'll be connected by either component or HD cables, not RF leads (does anyone still use those, by the way???), and I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that component and HD connections work regardless of the Hz refresh rate, but just wanted to make sure.
The TV's a 40" 1080p if it makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any help

If you are connecting via HDMI, then the 50Hz/60Hz issue will not arise.
If you are using the component interface, then it still shouldn't be an issue because the set should support PAL 60 anyway.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
The "black and white" issue you mentioned is nothing to do with the refresh rate; it's because the game you were playing was designed for a NTSC system - as used in the USA, and the TV you were using was not compatible.
If you had used a RGB scart cable or component then it would have been in colour, but I am guessing you were still using RF.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -
It is not uncommon for UK games to feature PAL 60 mode as well as the standard PAL 50, and consoles these days also offer the chance to output at PAL 60.Taffybiker wrote: »The "black and white" issue you mentioned is nothing to do with the refresh rate; it's because the game you were playing was designed for a NTSC system - as used in the USA, and the TV you were using was not compatible.
There are also a handful of games out there (games that were destined for the UK that is) that only run at PAL 60.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
Elder Scrolls Oblivion is one of them (on the 360). I vaguely recall Metroid Prime 2 for the GC was as well.KillerWatt wrote: »There are also a handful of games out there (games that were destined for the UK that is) that only run at PAL 60.Back on MSE after a 5 year hiatus.
