Buying a second hand car from a dealer (garage, not privately)

I often read on these threads that people get stitched up buying cars privately and see people saying "you do not get the same level of protection as you would from a dealer" so my questions are:
Just what protection do you get buying a car from a dealer? and should you take out the additional warranty they seem to offer?
Assuming I was looking for a 9 or 10 year old car and had £2000 in cash I could get a lot better deal privately so why should I go to a dealer?
What should I look out for from either? Thank you

3 month warranty for a starter, plus generally you'll find that motor trader's dealing in vehicles over 5 years old are generally quite competitively priced, often meaning they're as cheap as private sales.

Hi, Do you get the 3 months warranty regardless of buying extended?
If the engine blew up in 2 months would you get a no quibble fix it or replace it?

It's a legal minefield but technicaly yes, although law does take into consideration age and cost of vehicle in the event of any legal challenges.

So if it is 10 year old and the engine goes you might as well have bought it privately?
