Recommend a carpet cleaner please

My carpets are in need of a thorough clean. When I was a kid my mum had a VAX and it was great but I have limited storage so I'm probably looking for something a bit smaller which can tuck away neatly. Is there such a thing?

I rent out a house with cream carpets (dont ask - long story!) and I've used my sister in laws vax, hired 2 different types of carpet cleaners and hired a professional carpet cleaner. IMO unless you regularly need to deep clean your carpets (and surely you dont get the wear and tear that my rental does), its better, and probably more cost effective to get someone in to do it.
The vax was ok, the hired ones no better (but bigger and costlier) but the professional is the only one that really made a difference (removed red wine stain from aforementioned cream carpet). Just a thought.
ps if you're in south Wales I can recommend the company I use (pm for details - I'm not trying to be an advert).0 -
Vax do a compact cleaner (Rapide) - ours lives in the loft. With a four year old it gets regular use and does a good job.0

We've got the Bissell Proheat All Rounder - its about the size of a medium cylinder cleaner, and it can be used as a normal vacuum cleaner (although you need to be a bit careful moving it about when you do that as it uses some water for filtration I think - can you tell we don't use it like that!). We've found it pretty effective - there are some really deep stains it won't deal with but its fine for general toddler grot!Adventure before Dementia!0

We've got a Bissell too, the red powerbrush one in Argos, one of my best purchases ever. It's amazing how dirty the water is when it's finished, and our letting agency said they wished all their tenants were like us, we'd left the (beige) carpets so clean (and we have a toddler)!
It's about the size of an upright vacuum cleaner though, I think any worth buying are that type of size. I do have a handheld Vax carpet cleaner as well but it was only good for small areas and I don't use it any more now I've got the other one.0 -

Thankyou everyone. I'll follow up on all this.
Though what is it with landlords putting cream/beige carpets in all over the place? Crazy!0 -
Another bissell owner here...factory reconditioned one off the bissell direct website. Bit heavy though does a good job.0

Rug Doctor is pretty good
when we bought our first house the beige carpets were very dirty due to traffic of people marching through house during viewings etc
carpet came up in a different color once we used the machine.. cost about £30 for weekend:T:money::T0 -
