Fear of flying

  • I tried hypnosis because I flew once and had a very turbulent flight which was scary. When I wanted to take the kids to Florida I couldnt face it!
I found some local hypnotists but they wanted to charge me at least £75 so i tried a website that claimed to offer an effective way to beat the fear using hypnosis and something called NLP.
Anyway, I got their CD for about £20 and used it. They said use it once but I used it twice and then again just before we travelled and I was much more relaxed. Also I put the hypnosis track on my MP3 player and listened to it during the flight and before we flew home.
I'm not sure if all hypnosis works so well, but this one worked for me. They were from a company called Overcome Now. Maybe if you search for them on Google you can track them down.
    I hope it helps!
    all the best, Ralph

plainsie- I did my short haul flight this week. I cried after we'd taken off. What an idiot eh?
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

I've just taken two flights and cried too. So I'm an idiot as well. The flights were not actually so bad but you can bet your life I will be the same next time. Thanks to you and everyone for the replies.

I used to fly quite often as a kid to visit my dad, and never had a problem. Then I had one bad flight, thought we were going to die....completely stupid, as it was just a case of not knowing what was happening, and nothing to do with actual danger as there wasn't any! but it was enough to give me a terrible fear of flying. I'm French, but live in Northern Ireland, and do not drive. So you can imagine the epic journeys I had to make to visit my mum in France! Ferry, bus, train....took me 26 hours once! lol

One day I decided this was ridiculous, and that I had to fly again.
for me, relaxation did not work at all. I tried breathing exercises, positive thinking..etc, nothing worked and I was still an hyper-ventilating wreck before a flight, and even cried at take off.

What REALLy worked for me was understanding the science behind flying, ie: how it works. I think it's the loss of control I really feared, but knowing how a plane takes off and stays up really helped me relax, as I now know that it's all about relatively simple physics.

A simple image explained it to me: think of when you're in a car, going quite fast. If you open the window and stick your hand outside, you will find that your hand "glides" and is naturally supported by the air outside. In fact, you have to used some force to push your hand down.
It's the same for a plane. It glides! The weight is supported by the atmosphere due to the speed at which it flies, like a cushion. Quite simple really, and that has helped me no end. I can fly with no problem now.

There are lots of websites that explain how it works, maybe you should have a look! :)

I went to my doctor for my fear to ask if i could have something, she prescribed me something to make me feel dozy. I also sat in the front seat so i was watching the air cabin crews faces most of the journey to crete!! I took comfort in the fact that they didnt look worried, because i thought if they did i would have something to worry about! On the way back i was better too.

That was a year ago and im due to fly again in about two and a half weeks time... im worrying about it now but im going to try and do the same thing, even if i have to poke my head down the gangway to see their faces! Feeling mellow with those tablets also helped me out
