cashing cheques

I posted recently on the debt free board about natwest claiming my entire months income that was credited in our joint account to repay an overdraft on my husbands sole account. After the advice given on here I used a template letter to write to natwest asking for the money back as they had left me with nothing.

Quoting the correct leglisation worked as they sent me and my husband a cheque for the full amount:j. The only problem is the cheque is in both names and the joint account we had was with natwest and they have closed this account so we can't cash the cheque.. We both have sole accounts with Llyods TSB, mine a basic account and my husbands a full account. We went into TSB this morning the see if we could add my husband to my account to make it a joint account. The computer said no.

I have phoned natwest who really are awful. They said the money was in a joint account and they will only issue a joint cheque even though my husband is happy for it to be issued in my name only. Natwest couldn't or wouldn't offer me any advice

Are we now stuck with a joint cheque for over £800 that we can't pay in any where?

I am going to ring up co op bank tonight after recommendations on here and see if we can get a joint basic account there, but they might say no too........

Any advice? Thanks

Instead of a bank account it might be easier to open a joint savings account and then withdraw it once the cheque has cleared. A desperation option would be using one of the cheque cashing firms but there would be a fee to pay, probably around 4% upwards.
