Help with Gas Cooker Please

I have a Cannon Gas Cooker which is probably about five or six years old.

Gradually over the past six to eight months the flames on the rings of the hob have started to get lover and lower (does that make sense).

It has got so bad that now one ring (front right) does not light at all, one ring (back left) works fine and the other two work at about a third of their capacity. The grill and oven still seem to be working fine.

I have seen on the Monesaving Old Style Thread some people recommending Companies like Ovenu and Ovenclean for bringing their ovens back to showroom conditions but I was wondering if anybody had any idea if they would improve the problem I have or is this something an engineer would need to fix?

have to taken all the fixings off the rings and cleaned with a good degreaser like cillit bang degreaser?, it sounds just like blocked filters, spray the whole, gas rings, <when cold>and a really good sponge wire. if evrything else is working i really bet its just grease build up inside rings

You will need to excuse my ignorance as I don't know what all the bits are called and I am a bit scared when it comes to dealing with gas, etc.

I have taken off the rings (where the pots stand on top off) and the round black bits (that go over the bit where the gas actually comes out) and scrubbed them all with various different oven cleaners and degreasers over the past few months.

After reading your post, I have now pulled the cooker away from the walll to have a look and see what else can come off. I have noticed there are probably a lot of bits (fascias, glass lid, etc) that I could screw off and that would maybe let me lift the actual "surface" off, leaving the rings themselves and I could probably get in to clean them better this way.

Is it safe for me to do this? I don't want to end up gassing myself!!!
  • I agree it sounds like a blocked bunch of jets
Remove them all and see whats below, its probably an open orifice
Im not telling you to turn the gas on and see if it comes out with the burners removed,I would not tell you to do that .

You can't gas yourself. The gas supply isn't poisonous nowadays. If you have the gas on unlit so it builds up and then create a spark, eg. by flicking a lightswitch, you can blow yourself up however so you should still make shure it's switched off.

Also if you cleaned the rings did you leave them wet or use anything corrosive on them. I once lived with an obsessive cleaner who insisted on frequenty removing and washing the rings with water and washing up liquid. Of course they rusted and blocked the jets. I fixed the problem by scrubbing off the rust with oil and brillo pad (wire wool is probably better if you've got), cleaning them, thoroughtly drying them and then giving them a generous wipe of oil to protect them from rust. (And the continuing assaults with soapy water from my blasted ex-housemate.)

Natural gas will asphixiate you, the most explosive mix of natural gas is 20%gas to 80%air, if your unsure about your abilities then get someone who knows what they are doing to help you out, if the rings are clear then the gas taps are probably bunged up, you gan buy gas tap grease from a plumbers merchant, the taps usually have two small screws on the front, once again be carefull please
