I've got a Bosch cordless strimmer and it's pretty good. I've had it for three years and I use it for work everyday, recharging it during lunch.
It's light and quiet (for a strimmer) and copes well with normal strimming, although strimming long grass runs the battery down pretty quickly. It uses blades rather than a line and they are quite dear, about £6.50 for twenty, but providing I'm careful and avoid hard edges, stones etc, a pack will last about a month, which is about 160 gardens trimmed.
The head twists to cut at different angles (I never use that feature). You can also change the head angle, which is useful for strimming under trampolines. The handle is telescopic, useful for storage and long enough for a six footer like myself to use, without bending.
Mine uses a nicad battery and I have a spare battery from an old Bosch drill, that also fits (more, or less). But you might find the more expensive Lion battery version better, as the nicad battery tends to deteriorate if not used pretty often.

hi there with the petrol ones do you have to get a special container or just fill with petrol for car? and is it easy to buy parts for line feed?0

The petrol strimmers are usually two strokes. So you mix two stroke oil with unleaded, you can buy graduated mixing bottles from the DIY stores.
You can get different thicknesses of line, depending on what yours takes. Check out how easy it is to rewind the spool. The Ryobi I tried a while back, was easy to reload. But the Flymo spool was almost impossible to refit after filling.0 -
I have a Honda four stroke, so no messing about with mixing bottles on that. It has a five year guarantee, but it was pricey and it's really more of a brushcutter. Still, your husband would be unlikely to kill it.0
