Faulty Acer Aspire .......

......purchased one year and four months ago - from Asda!

I saw the link on here and managed to get one - it's only been used a maximum of 10 - 15 times (when we go away from home to check emails and such). In that time it's been fine, but when we used it a few weeks ago it refused to work. OH knows about these things, and says
the unit powered up, the hard discs were spinning and the fans operated, but there was no output to the display or out of the VGA port - which I understand means it's terminal!

So - sorry for my ignorance but I want to get it right, do we go back to Asda with the receipt etc and see what they have to say, or contact Acer directly and see if they will do anything? Another complication is that we paid by credit card but closed down the account a few months ago - will that complicate things if we don't get any joy from Asda or Acer with regards to a chargeback?

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to the best (and correct!) way to proceed, please?

Thank you!

    Hey there,

Well before I wittle on about what you can do returns etc, i'll put my tech support hat on :D

When testing the output on a vga monitor did your OH use the keys to switch the output? Usually it's a "fn" (function) key and one of the F buttons (like F8, depends on the model) to direct the output to the monitor, if not suggest doing this as to recover any files that are on it.

In regards to the laptop in general, it does sound like it's faulty and you'll need to deal with Asda. Usually their customer service is good and won't bat an eyelid, however don't expect a refund, they will favour a repair first.

If they say it's past the warranty you need to stand firm and state that the laptop is not of satisfactory quality and you are making a claim for a repair under the Sale of Goods Act and this is nothing to do with the warranty. At this stage, you will probably be talking to the manager or head office. They are likely to ask for an engineers report to prove that the item is faulty, which is reasonably and to be expected.

All you need to do is find a local reputable computer repair shop and ask them for a report. Don’t worry they should reimburse you for this. If the laptop is found to be faulty then the retailer should agree to a repair. If they cannot repair the laptop they can offer a replacement or a cash refund taking into account your usage.
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

Thank you very much for your kind reply!

Yes he function switched it - nothing happened! (I'm not a tecchie but it's his job lol!)

I'm not after a refund particularly - just a working netbook would be nice! Can I ask for a replacement or does it have to be repaired after this time? I realise it's over a year old but it's hardly been used in that time. :(

As it is out of manufacturers warranty you are going to have to go through SOGA for this one. It should have lasted longer than it has but you will need to get a technicians report to show that it is an inherent fault that has cased the failure. Basically to prove that you have not dropped it or somehow caused the fault yourself by the way you have used or stored it. I would recommend speaking to Asda first though. They might agree to get it fixed without you doing this if they have had issues with the product already. Hope it gets sorted.
