I dislike motorway driving, especially the slip road onto the motorway

It's odd that they don't teach motorway driving as part of the driving test. Anyway, the trick with slip roads is to accelerate hard down the slip road, so you're doing the same speed as the other traffic when you try to merge in. In theory, you might find yourself doing 70 along the slip road when you reach the end of it (in which case you would simply stop on the hard shoulder until there's a gap in the traffic) but in practice that's never happened to me.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Just thinking about doing that fills me with terror!

Why can't every junction be like 21A on the M25 where, going south, you just drive along the slip road and find yourself on the motorway without having to feed in. Once on the motorway I am fine.

Does the motorway increase the number of lanes at that junction?

I don't know what to do about the terror, except suggest that you get some lessons. Missing out on the motorways means that you are driving on the far more dangerous side roads.

I am not sure why it happens like that, I just wish all junctions could be the same.

I have considered having some motorway lessons and think I really should do that. I drive on country lanes all the time, around Surrey, so far it has been fine but I do drive carefully.

I know I miss out by not driving on motorways, in fact, I would probably not need to move house at all if I could just get over that fear. The journey can be done on the M25 to St Albans, quite quickly usually, but I always take the train. I am a hopeless case.:rotfl:

A1 Junction 9, Letchworth, South does this.....not terribly far from St Albans/ Wheathampstead .
Also possible to drive to Wheathampstead along the lanes from here. Not sure of times but less than an hour.

    I love Letchworth :)

We're near Letchworth (although over the border in Bedfordshire - one junction up the Al(M))

I know there are ways to go along lanes to get to St Albans from there but not sure exactly how either. I do know the M1 can quite often be very busy in the mornings, as does the Al(M).
