Following a suggestion on this site a couple of months back I switched from BT to Primus Home phone. The changeover seems to have gone fairly smoothly. I seem to recall the deal was £9.25/month including free evening and weekend calls to UK geographic numbers. Strangely their first invoice was for 35p. On contacting them they said this was my charge for 1 day's service. Depending on the number of days in a month this would work out at £10.50 if the month had 30 days - rather more than the figure I was quoted when I switched. Can anyone clarify what the monthly fee should be for this deal?
The problem I also have is prising out of Primus details of their calling charges for calls to UK non-geographic numbers. Apparently nowhere on their website do they publish information on call charges to UK numbers starting 08. After some hassle, they finally came up with current charges for 0845 and 0870 (not listed on their website):
0870 7.74p 3.86p 1.46p
0845 3.86p 0.98p 0.98p
As regards other chargeable numbers they said:
Please email us the complete number of 0844, 0843 and 0871 numbers show that we can we you the cost of those
This seems a strange way of doing business when they won't give me a full list of charges but I have to go through the hassle of listing each and every number in full that I might want to call at some time in the future. Surely I'm entitled to see their full price list for these numbers. Has anyone else managed to winkle this information out of them?

AFAIK, Primus charges the same as BT for 0843/44 and 0871/2/3 calls (i.e. no extra).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

No that's the puzzling thing about people who promote them as being the cheapest for line rental WITHOUT adding that MAJOR caveat - ie the PRIMUS website is SO light on any meaningful information about call costs.
That lack of clarity swung me against subscribing to them - as at the end of the day it's the CALL COSTS that make the most difference to most phone bills and usually when people are HIDING something they have SOMETHING to hide!
MSE appraisals of them as being cheap on line-rental OUGHT to include the caveat every time!

I guess it depends how much you value getting rid of BT.
I accept that it may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire - only time will tell...Especially as it's not exactly difficult to get BT to give you £3/month off your line rental (paid as a £36 up-front payment) - taking it to £8.54/month and well below Primus. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I pay BT line rental and have Primus Penny Mobile - I never use the landline but I would never change from BT/Primus as any cost saving on line rental would be wiped out in a few mobile calls, I also have 100 international landlines & 01/02/03 with Orange mobile calls 24/7 with my £5 Orange broadband 2nd line...
BT £11.54
Pri £0.00
Or £0.00
I will never drop BT for a few quid line rentalIf I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:0 -

One advantage claimed by Primus over BT is that the evening starts at 18:00 instead of BT's 19:00 and free calls can last 90 minutes instead of 60. I hope that turns out to be correct!0 -
