Flooring quote

Options
Hi,

We have been given a quote for some wood floors to be fitted for a major part of our downstairs. We went to a local shop, and happy to pay a little bit extra for this, however I was gobsmacked by the fitting and additional costs.

The floor area is 40m2, I had agreed to remove all carpet, skirtings, trim doors and clear furniture etc. This is solid oak flooring which was £45m2, adding in wastage the figures was approx £2100, then adding additional costs, plywood to cover all of floor (existing floorboards) and miscellaneous items came to approx £1500. The labour then came to £1400 - for a 2 day (possibly 3) job. Now is this really the going rate for a floor fitter  - if so I maybe switching careers!?!

I am now thinking of changing to high quality laminate as a floating floor and installing myself...

cheers

It was a few years ago but I had a solid maple hall floor of about 12m2 fitted as a glued floating floor over floorboards for about £300' It took the fitter and his assistant a day and a half. The fitter was a contractor used by a small chain of high quality (and high price) regional furniture store. People who shop there normally expect the best

As I was replacing all my battered skirting and architrave with MDF equivalents they had been removed. I didn't use a plywood layer as I'd hired a sander to take any bowing out of the old boards. The fitter dealt with the door frames using what I believe is a special type of circular saw that allowed the floor to go under the door frames.

Unless I'm a bit out of touch with prices I would say that you should be able to get a much cheaper quote if you shop around.

Edit: Futher thoughts. Actually after thinking about it I'm not sure that the saw was a purpose made piece of kit and may have ben an angle grinder with a saw blade fitted
    Awaiting a new sig

Wooden floor fitters normally charge £20 - 25 / m2. (South east). Remember that the fitter will probably only be getting £800 of that £1400 for fitting. the rest is the stores mark up and goes on their bottom line. You would be better off trying to employ an independent fitter and save some money.
