VW Golf cam belt
Options
Hi, i am after some information on my car. Spoken to a mechanic today and he says that the cam belt should have been changed in the past (not sure if it has or not as the car is new to me) millage is 40k age 13 years.
What im wanting to know is roughly how much would it cost to replace on a 1997 golf 1.4 (mk3) and also i would like to know if my engine would be an interference engine or not.
Cheers for your time

I have a W reg bora and was adised this needed doing at 60,000 miles - it cost me about £170 IIRC.:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0

At 13 years it's overdue, regardless of mileage.0

Ye, thats what i was told.
What im wondering is, will the belt going destroy the engine beyond economic repair OR just be a bit of a pain as far as stopping the car from working till a new one is fitted.0 -
If the cam belt goes there is a fair chance your enginbe will seize - get it changed.:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0

It will almost certainly be an interference engine.
For comparison i have a 92 Golf Mk3.
The engine is code AAM.
I had the belt changed at about 45k by a main dealer. It would have been in about 2001 and it cost about £140. Fast forward to about 6 months back..mileage is now 95k and local indie quoted £150..main dealer quoted about £250.
I bought a kit including belt and tensioner from GSF for about £25 and did it myself...simples.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
How did you know which parts to buy from them?0

Probably won't get done again but mark on the engine date and mileage when you do it for future ref. Nail varnish or similar is best.0

GSF are the top boyz and girls for VW bits..they know everything there is to know.
Of course you need the engineering expertise to do the job. something which i have in abundanceFeudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
