Do I wait for Photoplus X4, or....?

My Photoplus9 does not work with Windows7. I have looked at Photoshop Elements8, but AFAIACS. it has one big drawback, that I have found intractable. The print on the menu bars is minute, not something a senior appreciates.
ATM Photoplus's latest is X3, but it is likely that X4 will be out soon.
That gives me choices:
get X3 now
wait for X4 and use a good freebie program until X4 is out.
What do you think: what are the most versatile (and friendly) freebies?
