Check Barclays statements

Sorry if i'm repeating someone else's thread, but Barclays are starting to use the same Rip-off-by-stealth tactics as Nat West. My son noticed that £10 had been charged to his Barclay's current account for two months in a row. He rang Barclays and was told that his account had been updated to a new type of account that gave lots of 'benefits' for a small monthly sum (it sounded almost identical to Nat West's rip-off Advantage Gold account).

He told them that he hadn't asked for this account, nor had he had any letters or telephone calls relating to it and that he wanted it cancelled immediately - but the CS guy told him that it could only be done if my son wrote to Barclays or by calling into a branch.

It will be interesting to see whether they refund his £20 charges!

I am amazed that they can do this without permission. What happens if the 'upgrade' you and the monthly fee pushes you over your overdraft limit and they sting you for that as well?

Equally frustrating is that the bank can do this whenever they like, but force you to trek down to the branch to cancel it - they wouldn't cancel it on the phone despite the fact that DS had telephone banking.

legally this would be viewed as an unsolicited goods or service - in which case you can probably sue them for taking your money. I suspect what they have done is unlawful. You have told them to remove it and refund - thats all you need to do.

When I used to work there, these accounts carried a 3 month money back guarantee anyway. I agree he shouldn't have been upgraded without his knowledge, but can't see why there's a problem giving him a refund.

They can't do that without permission, it is illegal. You can claim back what they charged you for the service, and if you get charged for going over your overdraft limit (because of it, or for some other reason) you can claim those charges back too.

  • Agreed as well, Natwest Advantage Gold is balls, as is the new Advantage Blue.

NatWest have TWICE transferred me to the Advantage Gold account without my consent. Both times I got my money back and the account transferred back.

They are clearly desperate for the extra money and the account was utter rubbish.

But I have just reclaimed my bank charges from them so I am SOOOO happy.
