Hi there. I'd like to get one of these Jars for my wife for Valentine's Day - I think she'd really love it. Where do you get them from??

You make it Ryan! Lillibet says she got a coffee jar and just covered the top but I'm sure any jar with a lid would do. Stick a pretty label on and then think of the promises! :)

Just a thought about the 'Jar of Promises' if you could be bothered to cut the messages out as hearts - maybe in red paper? - this would look really nice as well.

  • How about finding a heart shaped paper punch from one of the craft shops (hate to be cynical, but there's usually one closing down somewhere....:( ) and punching out loads and loads of hearts to go in with the promises. You could use magazine pictures to add a little variety if you want, pictures of jewellery, flowers, seaside holidays, champagne bottles, etc.
  • :) Thanks for the jar of promises, that will go down so well, Cheers
  • This is such a lovely idea....

I too am stealing the promise jar for my man!

    He's gonna love it :)

    Thank you
  • I did this for my girl and she loved it. I even explained that most of the promises were pure filth and not all mushy, lovey dovey ones ....

..she still loved it. GUYS .... get making those jars!!! I'm sure you can come up with 52 promises. Who needs the blanks.
  • Just finished making mine..........thanks 4 the idea, i know bf will love it !!

Oh I love this kind of challange.

In the past I have given my Hubby a jar of promises, good for 1 year. Basically an empy jar with 52 slips of folded paper in & he drew out one a week. Half of the slips were blank, the other half had "promises" on which he could cash in, subject to reasonable notice where necessary. This way our anniversary lasted a whole year, plus the cost was virtually non-existant. Things like :
I promise to wash & vacuum your car
I promise to cook the romatic dinner of your choice
I promise to spend an entire Saturday supplying you with pop-corn & watching Lord of the Rings/Star Trek films without complaining
I promise to go out for the day with you bird watching/fishing
I promise to do your share of the house work for 1 week
I promise to .....erm....you know!! (quite a few of these!)

For my birthday last month Hubby had already promised to buy me a very pratical much needed not at all romantic present which I was quite happy with. The day before I made a throw away comment about needing to spend the weekend giving the house a major spring clean. I came home from work on my birthday to find that he had taken a couple of hours off work & had a major clean & tidy session so I walked into a (fairly) sparkling organized house! Doesn't sound romatic but it really was the nicest suprise he could have given me at the time! I am pregnant & was struggling to cope with work, home life & morning sickness at the time so his putting in such an effort really did make my week. He also cooked me dinner (Fried egg & tomato sandwiches but at least I didn't have to cook or wash up!).

For our anniversary next month I am planning an "indoor picnic" with candles, classical music & nice food in front of an open fire. It won't cost much more than our usual evening meal, just a bit of planning & effort, but hopefully it'll give us some quality time together in a relaxed way.

When your busy planning a wedding or buying a house (or in our case being pregnant!) sometimes just being together & not stressing can be diffcuilt to acheive. You don't need to spend moeny to remind someone how special they are!

Thank you so much for this idea. I did my own box of promises for Valentine's and it went doen a treat. Hubby was very pleased, especially as I said I would go to the footy with him for one of them!!

    Thanks again, a fab idea!

    Hey there,

You have already agreed to not go crazy, so why dont you give her a little gift or flowers to pretend you are not "going crazy" then, surprise her by making her dinner and have a romantic night in with a slushy film? Girls love guys cooking for them!

If you are not much of a cook then im sure there a loads of folks on here, including me, who could give you some ideas/easy recpies- (Marks and Spencers do some lovely ready made food you could pass off as your own!!!)

    Just a thought?`

Let us know what you decide.

It's very important not to start off the wrong way, don't pretend M & S food is your own.

Honesty is the single most important character trait required to make a relationship work.

I feel sorry for all these guys who won't or can't cook and all the girls married or living with them, get out of the dark ages and try it or learn to do it.

Hunter/Gatherer in this new millenium, goes to the supermarket, sets the timer on the cooker, dishes up and washes up.

I'm 42 and have been cooking for my wife since 1987, why not you!
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

    love the promises jar!

    have done things like :

breakfast in bed (even just toast and tea, but the toast cut into a heart shape before putting marmite on - aaah. - check she likes marmite first!)

agree with candles, bath, dinner at home. In fact we MUCH prefer to have our special meals at home as then you can talk and have real time together rathr than having to spend time getting to/from restaurant etc.

change the bedclothes! (I hate doing this so love it when hubby does it!)

    watch your favourite film together

dont forget to make a handmade anniversary card for her - perhaps with a photograph of you both (from early days) stuck in/on it!

if you have the day together - go for a walk or matinee cinema performance (normally cheap during the day!) or pack a picnic.
