Striped screen on ACER Aspire One

I had my AA1 netbook open on the floor, and accidentally brushed it as I pulled a quilt off the bed. It is possible that a zip hit it.
The screen now displays only stripes: mostly vertical but some horizontal. It is a bit like pyjamas or tartan.
Switching it off, giving it a rest and rebooting has no effect: judging by the lights it is going through the startup but nothing shows on the screen.
It does respond to some FN keys: Sleep, Brightness and Display toggle.
I am not sure exactly what happened, or whether I now have a hardware, software or keyboard problem.
I found an old posting for someone whose DELL had a 'pyjama screen' but there was nothing useful there. I posted on the Aspire One official forum, and got no replies. I would like to know if there is a simple solution before taking AA1 to a repair shop, so any suggestions will be very welcome.
