Oven not working - what can we do?

Our oven didn't work when we bought our first house although the seller swore it worked on the day they moved out. Nothing much you can do and it really is only a minor inconvenience compared to anything structurally wrong.
Our oven just need a new heating element, which cost £15 and slotted into the back of the oven, where the old one was.
If the grill and timers working, it's probaly just an element0 -
the toilet in my parents en-suite has caused so many problems - that the previous sellers did not disclose. kept blocking - had to get a guy out that uses acid down it as the toilet was not fitted properly. turned out previous owners knew this and they also caused problems by stuffing nappies down it
re ovens. i know that my parents have one of those ovens that if you lift the glass lid over the hobs then the oven will work - otherwise it will not.0 -
wigginsmum wrote:It's a long shot, but you haven't interrupted the power supply or pressed buttons to send it into automatic mode instead of manual, have you? This can make an oven seem dead.Sparky29 wrote:We have got a gas cooker that has electric ignition. When the power goes off the cooker timer has to be changed from auto to manual before the oven will light. The hob and grill still work OK. See if it says auto on your display next to the clock and try and get it off.
You were both dead right! When my Mum was helping me clean the place before we moved in, I remember she accidentally set off the oven timer. In trying to put it right she must have switched it to auto. So it does work after all! Thanks everyone!0 -
""Would we be better off just replacing the whole kitchen now, as we would do this eventually anyway?""
so may i assume that this is not an option now then !!!!!!!!!!
how we all, myself Very much included, love to jump to conclusions !0 -
I meant, if it turned out the oven was broken and unrepairable. I have no idea how it works with fitting a new kitchen around an existing oven.0

In our case we came in before exchange (property empty which made it easier) to test the appliances/shower/boiler/heating/water. We found that the cold tap in the kitchen was not working, the EA was with us so he knew this, and as well as asking the EA to tell the vendor, our solicitor requested this to be fixed. But we have just completed and the tap has not been fixed, so we have technically no drinking water (i don't think the hot, and bathroom taps supply are supposed to be used reallly for drinking (?)). Apparently his solicitor wrote to our solicitor about this, saying that he probably might not have time to get this organised but she did not communicate this to us. Hence I don't think we are going to be able to do anything about this, but the vendor was the one pushing for a quick sale!!
Hence i can't stress enough how important it is to check these things EARLY on!
Also we never checked the TV aerial reception - although there are TV points in all the rooms the reception we get is better with an old coat-hanger. I don't know what is wrong with the aerial, we've tried all the obvious things, so more £££ to sort this out!!!0 -

Or at least - decide early on how important these things are to you.
Re the drinking water - depends on whether the taps in the bathroom are drawing water off the rising main or not. Boiled should be OK, though - but still not ideal, I agree. Standpipe in the street anyone?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
