Tenants insurance not the same as contents insurance?

Hi there. next week we're moving to a 3 bed terraced townhouse built around 2004/2005.

Received a call today from the same people who did our credit/reference checks (goodbye £280!) trying to sell me tenants insurance as contents insurance was not enough for our property due to it's build type and apparently I should have been told this beforehand. I don't see the difference except the quote he gave me was £76/100 more than my current contents insurance dependent on me paying annually or monthly.

I've contacted my letting agents to enquire about this and they never called me back before closing today so i'll chase them up on Monday.

Does anybody here have experience of needing tenant insurance? I just don't understand why i need it as if the carpets get damaged the contents insurance will cover it?

Thanks

Tenants insurance is to cover items belongingto the landlord (e.g. carpets curtains, fitted units, as you say) Your contents insurance covers contents that you own (not those of your LL). If you call the people you're arranging contents insurance with, they may be able to provide tenants insurance too - I believe my tenants cover was c. £15 on top of contents cover with Aviva. Not that many insurers offer tenants insurance, last time I checked.
