Direct line insurance renewal

This has happened to me for the last four years on my car and five years on my home insurance (Buildings and contents). But no matter what they say the first time about how they dont match their online price THEY DO MATCH IT!

Go online get the quote, save the quote and then call them up. Be friendly and just explain that the price on the renewal is too high, even their website is cheaper and if they dont agree to match it just say i'll look around and say you'll call back later to cancell. Ring back and get another advisor, my experience is that each advisor seems to be different on how willing to help they are. I've always got them to price match their website on both car and home so keep trying. I know they do match it and normally ask for the quote to be saved so they can see it on their system and match it.

The only price i've never got them to match is their breakdown cover. But the advisor every year has told me if its cheaper online, cancell this policy and take it out again straight away online and its ok.

Sorry for the lengthy write up but hope it helps

I wonder if Direct Line = RBS (they are affiliated) = trying to claw back money in every way possible?! The cynic in me...

My car insurance is with DL and it went up late 2009 even if I have never claimed. I think insurance is very much a hazardous guessing game. I must do a proper shop around next time.

I am sure it's affected by RBS, as my Building & Contents policy came in at over £400, rang to challange & they said they are not allowed to discount like last year.

I suspect the are preparing to sell DL on.

I ended up with the Pru.

That's their plan (RBSI as a whole), but not until 2013.

    Debt-free and Proud!
I must be the only person in the world that this doesnt happen to, my car insurance only went up by £20 on my renewal with Direct line and I increased my milage from 6k to 10k a year. Car isurance is lots of hassle for me, 5 years no claims and only had driving license for two years, so it was really easy for me to stay with them.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

Actually you can't blame them for doing it - if they can make money from people who don't check, then fair enough.
It doesn't seem fair though, there must be thousands of people who are still from the generation of thinking they'll be rewarded for loyalty, and thus getting ripped off.
I'd love to see how they justified doing this though - I wonder if they'd be honest and admit the reason they do it is, ultimately, because they can.

Anyway - I got a decent level of cover through Swinton (oh god..had issues here before!), who found Fortis. Seems a better level of cover, for £200, as opposed to the £470.

I remember (he says, teary eyed) when DL offered a unique product, good value for money, brilliant customer care. I think that must have changed when RBS got involved.

Ahh well! Rant over. I feel purged. I just hope everyone shops around.

I appreciate that, but ours went from £370 to £660. Thats a large increase

Who did you find the cheaper quote with?

I got a few quotes yesterday and much to my disgust this year DL is still coming out best for my car insurance.
