I had a raised risk of downs with this pregnancy, 1 in 100. I had the amnio, which didn't hurt more like being prodded and a bit of discomfort (I did expect it to hurt, I am normally an absolute wimp and am dreading giving birth)
I got the preliminary results back within 48 hours and the full culture of the fluid back in a week. They said all was fine, but it is worrying at the time.
I think I was very lucky, I had fantastic treatment.
If you do choose to have an amnio, which I'm sure they'd allow you too, there is a risk of miscarriage, around 1%.
I agree, don't second guess yourself, you can only do what you think is best at the time. I personally am glad we had the tests done.

I didn't have any tests during my first two pregnancies. I knew that I wanted my children even if they were born with disabilities. My second baby was born with Down's syndrome. He had surgery for several rare conditions (which were not directly connected with DS) when he was nine hours old. Just before his surgery, he was given four hours to live.

My son is now twelve years old. Most of his problems have arisen from his surgery, although undoubtably DS has contributed to other difficulties.

When I was expecting my third child, I had CVS. I wanteed my baby regardless of the result, but I just wanted to know. He didn't have any disabilities.

Having a child with disabilities is not easy, but I wouldn't swop him for the world. Listening to him read, when I didn't think he would ever master this skill, is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.

OP, try not to worry (easier said than done!). I wish you a trouble free pregnancy and a healthy baby.

I had a high result from my test as well. I was warned of the possibility of Spina Bifida and was sent to the hospital for counselling. I was taken for a scan first and they discovered I was having twins:eek: Multiples give an abnormal reading too apparently, so could be any number of reasons. Try not to worry too much.
