Selling Herbs
Hi everyone,
Just a quick question really. We've been having a go at growing some things at home in one of those basic plastic greenhouses. Now so far things have been going well, we've managed to get started our Tomato plant, corriander, basil, lectuces (need moving to a bigger pot) and my pepper plant I think is just showing signs of shoots. Out of everything we've been growning the corriander plants are doing the best and I'm amazed at how well they have flurished from seeds. What my question is basically,
1) Is it possible to take cuttings from herb plants to grow some more.
2) The surplus plants I'm bound to end up with, I'm going to give some to family etc but I'm just wondering what do people think my chances are of selling some of the surplus I make and if so where would be the best place to sell it.
thanks for any advice you are able to give.

I've taken several cuttings of mint which are now prospering in their individual pots and hope to try selling them soon. Not tried anything else - the method will vary from plant to plant I suspect?0

Thanks you both for the replies. Where are you planning on selling your mint Orange King?0

As you say, it's so easy to grow basil, mint, coriander and other herbs from seeds, so I don't bother taking cutting. I just buy packets of 'basic' or 'value' seeds and sow them very thinly in little pots (4 or 5 seeds only). I pinch them back to two strong leaves, so that they make sideshoots and grow bushy. I think that I only take cuttings from Rosemary and Lavender.
Car boots sales are probably the best place to sell them. Herbs are very popular - especially unusual mints (lemon flavoured, apple flavoured, spearmint, etc) and basils. I'm always on the look-out for herbs that I can't grow myself or get in supermarkets.
I've seen two people selling from their homes near me. They both have a table top near their front door and a sign near the road drawing passers-by to their surplus stock. The pots are labelled and priced and there's a little stack of envelopes under a stone. You put your money in the envelope and post it through the letter box. One is raising funds for the local hospice and they both seem to be doing a roaring trade.

Annuals from seed
Perennials from cuttings.
Rosemary, sage, thyme should be easy to root and grow on.
Coriander seeds grow well if you buy a huge bag of them from the food cash and carrys - works out lots cheaper than buying them from seed shops. But they go to seed quickly if they don't have a good root depth.0 -
I hope to sell at car boot sales while the school has a fair which is really well attended.0
