MSE News: Volcanic ash - most insurers will NOT pay out

This is the discussion thread for the following MSE News Story:

"Only seven of the 20 companies we sampled said they would consider a pay-out if you've yet to buy cover ..."

Comments

  • I'm surprised that as many as 7 of the 20 would consider covering it.
I don't see any problem with them refusing to cover it on new policies so long as they make that clear from the outset. I suppose another option would be to jack up the premiums to a very high rate.
This could cause big additional problems for the airline industry. There's no way I would book a holiday at the moment that involved flying and I imagine that would apply to many others too. I would either settle for a holiday in the UK or do the car/ferry route. Or maybe boat/train and hire a car at the other end. A bit more hassle making the trip but I would just settle for holidaying nearer home to reduce travel time.
I will holiday in the UK this year (by car). That decision was already made several months before the volcano stuff started.

    I think there is a slight miss-understanding here -

Guy - I bet if you asked those 20 companies again, the oes that would cover are referring to any other volcanic action and not this current one in Iceland.

You will find 20 out of 20 will NOT COVER this particular volcano as it is a known event and insurance covers "possibilities" not "certainties"

What about if you've already got cover and bought your flight. But your insurance will need renewing before you fly?
Can you renew your old policy on a like for like basis or is it a case of reading the small print?

Given that AXA are refusing my claim for holiday cancelled through Volcanic Ash (flight to Milan and cruise in Italy), I am wondering how many more people have suffered the same rejection from AXA and would wish to form an action group to fight their case? I notice that on your site its claimed that having a premium policy with AXA provides cover. Its my understanding that this is what I have and they still reject the claim due to geological phenonomen.
