Computer Parental controls

Hi new to site but wondering what other parents do to keep children safe (is that is actually possible?) on-line. Found a guide at berthanet.co.uk about Windows Live Family Safety but don't know if it's worth all the trouble. Especially as it is a Microsoft product!
