Definately throw it away. Not worth risking being ill and having time off work. When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile0

I don't know how flies get in when windows and doors are closed, but they do that sometimes in my flat. They don't always go for food, though. I've had them blundering around my living room ignoring food I've got on the table... for hours. They get in to houses without meaning to and fly round looking for an exit. So if it was me, and the beef hadn't been out very long, I'd assume the chances the fly hadn't been on it were reasonably good, wash the beef very, very thoroughly in soapy water (!), very thoroughly... rinse it off with even more thoroughness, wipe it down and eat it. Call me nuts. If the very thought of flies makes you feel sick tho, I'd chuck it. You can't eat food when you're put off by the thought of critters that may have been on it. You just can't.0

cathybird,
Can you really wash meat in soapy water and then eat it?

Whether you CAN wash food in soapy water is not the real consideration - you CAN do whatever the heck you want to do but as to whether it is advisable is another matter completely!! For most people eating the beef is unlikely to cause a problem. The point is none of us know if we will be the unlucky one to suffer that day from that contamination. As a food scientist I have to say I personally think you'd be stark staring bonkers to take any risk with your health - think about all the places the fly could have been before it got into your kitchen.....and all the 'matter' it could have been happily sitting on, laying eggs on or picking up detritus from..... Have I said enough!! Go for the dry crusts this time and take the lesson! Someone was looking out for you that you saw the fly!:rotfl:0

oh I don't know!! I knew it was probably inadvisable to post that... makes me sound overly cavalier. My point is that I've seen a lot of flies in my house over the summers and they've never gone for any food, or the bin, or anything, just tried for ages to get out of the nearest window, or wherever the nearest source of light is. So I've assumed from that that the chances are good it wouldn't have got on the food. But I'm sure you're all correct, probably wisest just to chuck it out.0

and in fact now I think about it I have washed plenty of food very thoroughly for one reason or another ... but probably not meat! So fugged I said it0
