New fuse box

A house I'm selling does not have a 17th edition compliance distribution board. The buyers have been quoted £478 + VAT for a "full RCD, not split & mains tails undersized". I assume this refers to the spec of the suggested replacement unit.

Can anyone out there tell me
1. Is this quote fair? (in South Yorkshire)
2. What unit would a reputable electrician be likely to fit?

cheers,

Str

1 - Sounds a bit expensive. If all they're doing is replacing the consumer unit and upgrading the mains tails I'd have said nearer £300 and certainly no more than £400.

2 - A basic 17th edition board usually has 2 RCD units which share the circuits connected so that if one trips you don't lose everything and it sounds like that is what they're proposing to fit.

Just one thing - is it a condition of selling the property that a 17th Edition board is fitted? Very few houses have one as yet, and not having one doesn't necessarily mean the installation is not up to scratch, but perhaps just not in full compliance of the latest regs.

as above, I usually charge £300-£400, there are quite a few good quality boards around, I prefer Hager, but MK, MEM, Wylex or Crabtree are ok, depending on the number of circuits the board would be around £80ish inc' vat, it's also possible to bring an older 16th Edition board up to 17th Edition spec's by installing a couple of RCBOs

I have ditched MK as I was gettng problems wth the odd MCB.

Went to Hager recently, wish I had moved over ages ago- quality is up where MK were a few years ago.

They don't sell to the sheds either :T
    baldly going on...

I've been quoted £350 in Surrey for an RCD board with 10 connections (?) or 10 whatevers. I think I'm going to have to go with someone else though because he cannot provide certification and I'm concerned that this could effect insurance.

You're right! No certificate = look elsewhere!
