To Good To Be True?
I'm currently planning a trip to japan in the summer and have been hammering the price comparison sites for months and i'm pretty much stuck with Virgin or BA if i want to fly direct - as the japanese airline are way overpriced at the mo.
BA's obviously a headache at the moment so virgin has been getting all my attention, but even then the current prices for my ECO flights are £720, which is £150 more than i paid last year (with no discounts).
Then i noticed i could buy 2000 miles for my account for £40. which i could then use to get £125 off my flight!!! so what's the catch??? I know i wont gain any miles for the flight but are there any other downsides?
Any other frequent virgin flyers out there shed any more light.

There is no catch, as long as you already have an account with them
I have done it before, the only downside is as you say you dont earn any more miles0 -
Also you can only buy miles if you have some prior "earning activity" in your Virgin account - if I am right, you don't have to have flown, but you at least need to buy something (wine? trains? Ebay? VS Amex card?) which has put miles into the account - full list here - http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/frequentflyer/earnmiles/index.jsp.
Full T&C's here - http://www.virginatlantic.com/en/gb/frequentflyer/tsandcs/flyingclubmembership.jsp#buymilesterms
but specifically it is point n:
n) Buy miles/Gift miles cannot be purchased unless a previous earning activity is showing in a member's account.
