I've noticed recently that I'm seeing a lot of Mercedes aged 6-10 years old that are riddled with rust. Not the odd scab but serious rot of the sort you saw in cars of a similar age 20 years ago. I've seen C-class, E-class and CLKs.

Anyone else noticed this?

I remember reading that rust was a big problem for Mercs of a certain (not that long ago) era - I assume it was this one they were talking about!

Yeah I believe they thought they were over-engineered and started cost cutting, such a shame as I'd have thought being over-engineered was a good thing.

Yep mercedes of the last 15 years have been designed by accountants rather than engineers so the quality of materials dropped which is why you see so many with MAJOR rust now.

there was an issue in the late nineties due to penny pinching, i had a 97 estate that was rotten , but as far as i am aware the issues were resolved about 8 or so years ago, all mercs now carry a 30year anti corrosion guarantee so there shouild not be any rotters driving around anywhere

Have seen quite a few scabby CLKs on the road. My mates 1972 SL still looks mint to this day.
  • 96/7 to 04 are the really bad years all models, from 04 ish they are supposed to be galvanized which should cure the problem, the jury is still out and when 05 plate MB's are 15 years old and totally rust free (and still running well) then we may know.

I have had an E Class for 14 years and it has had a bit of rust on the bottom edge of the doors and at the bottom of the radiator grill, but nothing too bad. I have seen a few examples of the same age or younger that look in a terrible state, one I saw had a rust holes just infront of the front wheels. For a time from 1996 it seems there were a few bad years for Mercedes.
