Other driver left scene of accident

Agreed with the advice about seeking medical help. Intention to seek compensation or not, get yourself checked out for your own benifit.
Not sure saying they were drunk if you don't know they were would help that much. If the reg is correct they police will be looking for the vehicle as being reported as having fled the scene and failing to provide insurance details so it will hopefully get pulled on an ANPR camera soon enough.0 -
Interesting, a deer came lolloping out of the undergrowth on the M5 2 weeks ago and went headlong into the side of my car; I called the police and they asked if I wanted them to attend [I didn't] and I asked for an Incident Number and they gave me one for insurance purposes.
Oh dear.
(Apologies-I couldn't help it.):rotfl:
Good luck with getting everything sorted OP.0 -
I got their reg and gave it to the police on the phone. The police never came to the accident site, so i didn't get a reference number. Will i need the reference number for my insurance? There are no witnesses, their were two women crossing the road, that's why the lights were on red, but i didn't think to stop them at the time and get their details. I didn't take any photos.
Will the police get back to me? The guy might not have insurance, that might bw why he drove off, or he was over the limit, or he was just an idiot. But either way he left the scene of an accident so will the police need to take a statement from me or anything?
Been driving 10 years and never had an accident before, just a bit scared is all.
You need to report the collision in person to the Police, as soon as reasonably practicable or in any case within 24 hours.
The Police should have attended the collision due to your injury, for whatever reason they didn't (maybe you didn't mention the injury when you rang as you were more concerned about the driver leaving the scene without exchanging details?).
Anyway, no action will be taken against the other driver unless you report the collision in person as per the Road Traffic Act. Ordinarily that would be when officers attend the scene buit if for whatever reason Police did not attend you still need to officially report it, over the phone isn't good enough I'm afraid.
When you report it (take both parts of your driving licence, certificate of insurance and MOT) you can give the offending vehicle registration and they will then send a Notice of Intended Prosecution to the other driver for 1) Failing to stop, 2) Failure to report and 3) careless driving. Your insurance company will want a collision ref number to prove the collision was reported but you usually get this later, it is not the log number that would have been generated when you initially rang.
Hope this helps and that you get it sorted out.0 -
Just an update. The police phoned me at 11.45 Thursday night to say they wanted to come and take a statement. When the police man arrived he went through everything that had happened and told me the description i had given matched the man they had in custody. Apparently he had driven himself to one of our local police stations and told them he had been in a n accident, at least that is what they thought he said but the police told me he was so drunk that he could hardly understand what the man was saying.
I have been to the doctor and have been prescribed some diazepam for the anxiety and to help me sleep which is a problem at the moment. My neck, shoulder and back are still hurting and i've had to take time off work at a crucial time. I have been in touch with my insurers yesterday and they were brilliant, got my claim underway and have been given a courtesy car care of his insurance (he was insured) also been put in touch with a solicitors to claim for my injury. I just wish some people would think more carefully about getting into a car when they have been drinking.
Trying for a baby soon, we are waiting until after our wedding in August, and i keep thinking what if? I could have been pregnant, or even been travelling with a child. I just don't understand how some people think. But it could have been much worse, if i'd not been stooped at the lights, maybe he would have driven straigth through them and hit the women on the crossing, so in a way i'm thakful i was there.
Thanks for the replies.
Will the police let me know what he says in his statement? or will they just deal with it without telling me the outcome?
Thanks again

Great news that they have them in custody. The police won't tell you exactly what he said, as this could prejudice their case, but they should keep you updated as to whether they will pass the file to the CPS to prosecute, and let you know court dates if you want to attend to hear the outcome.
The important thing now is to try and relax - feeling shaken up is certainly normal but at least everything is being sorted for you now, and there is clearly no question regarding who is at fault. No point dwelling on "What ifs", but I certainly hope you feel better soon!0 -
Thanks for the update. Glad this man turned himself in as it doesn't sound like the police would have gone looking for him and you would have been in a much worse position trying to claim.
Hopefully it will be relatively straightforward now they have the other party and his details.
Did the doctor note that you had whiplash or injuries caused by the accident or did they just note the anxiety? This could be quite important if you are off work for a while and need to make a claim. You may have a problem claiming if they didn't note it.0 -
No the doctor write quite extensive notes, including my degree of movent of my head in each direction eg. 20 degrees to the right, 60 degrees to the left, 20 degrees up 20 degrees down... he was really nice and has noted everything down needed. Haven't heard anything from the police as yet. Thanks for the replies0
