Thanks for all the replies
Whilst actually applying for the card would be an interesting experiment (and I confess I am curious to see whether or not a card would arrive!) it's not something we want to to do. I will not have my son applying for a card even as an experiment. Plus I believe it could cause the junk mail to snowball.
We do exactly what Lisyloo does! We rip out and rip up the little address/personal bits, so that we can still recycle the bulk of the paper. So I cannot imagine that they got his details from physical post.
What is really puzzling me though is HOW they got my sons details?!!! I'm going to pursue this and demand answers.
I am also still wondering whether or not this is linked in some way, either directly or indirectly, to the moment we opened his bank account at the Halifax.0 -
It's possible but it's quite hard to find out where it came from.
Any time you register on an internet site for a freebie or a competition your details could be passed on.
You should always tick (or untick) the boxes if you don't want your details passed on.
If there isn't a choice (you should read the privacy policy) then personally I opt out of registering for the freebie/competition.
When your son opened the account with Halifax what instructions did he give them about his personal details.
It can be confusing because sometimes you tick the box to have your details passed on and sometimes it's the other way round.
Did he give them permission to pass he details on (perhaps passively by not informing them that he wanted them NOT passed on).
What is their privacy policy?
Did he check it at the time of signing up.
If you're bothered by junk mail then you can't be too careful.
He can sign up with the Mailing Preferences Service (MPS) to say he deosn't want junk mail.
It's not obligatory so companies are not obliged to follow it, but in general you get good results.0 -
I was told by Bank of Scotland (Halifax) that my personal details would only EVER be used to send me details of products that they themselves provide and would only be used for such a purpose when I was eligible for them, ie, once I'm 18.0
