Insurance Tip

I was a bit surprised to realise none of my colleagues were aware of this tip to get cheaper car insurance.

It perhaps only applies to younger drivers in their 20s but if you add a parent to your insurance, even if its unlikely theyll drive your car then youll get maybe 5/10% off.

Im 27 and with 7 years no claims yet adding my mum as a named driver to my policy reduces it by about 4%.

My girlfriend adding me to hers reduces hers by about 20%!!!

And places like Directline give you further discounts for being on other peoples policies!!!!

  • it is a good tip to those who dont know.another good tip is to complete a pass plus and put a parent on a policy too. reduces the first years premiums no end. but be aware that the second year that pas plus doesnt affect the policy so may rise during the second year but not by much as hopfully youd have 1 yr NCB by then!

It can apply to everyone, mine is cheaper with my wife added than just me and the same for her car, add me and the price drops.

Yes, it's relatively well know. You'd think it would put the price up, but no, it can, and often does decrease your premium.

The reason is pretty straightforward, that it's safer to have someone else who can drive your car. e.g. If you are feeling unwell or tired etc and you need to drive home, if only you are insured then you'd be tempted to risk it. But with a second driver you can hand over the keys.

It can work the other way too.
My car ins. (just myself driving) is considerably cheaper with my eldest daughter added as a named driver even with her no fault previous single accident declared!

Actually, in the case of parents and children it's because it increases the average age ;)
