Question about a Camera! To Sell to Help Bills or Not?

Hi - thanks to everyone.
I have had a reply back from Jessops (main email address for I think, head office)....they say they now have a policy (nationwide) of not buying any cameras/kit from the public so at least I know for sure now.
I also rang another local camera shop and got a very snooty & brisk "No!" when I asked if they bought cameras...I didn't even get to say what it was, it could have been a top of the range digital for all they knew. Ah well, stuff em.
I will look into advertising at the college I think before advertising on EBAY.
I know we are now in the digital age but this is an absolutely brand new spanking set of kit which retails even now at approx £160 so at this time I would be reluctant to let it go for £30- £40. I will if I have to I guess - but not just yet.
Thanks everyone. Oh and ContainsMildPeril: Re the insurance company and replacing things.....I know! It was a pain in the bum all the way through getting stuff replaced and in the end they did issue a cheque for some suitcases we had stolen even though I was told they absolutely do not issue cheques...? I gave up trying to work out how they function after being told several contradicting things over the course of the claim!

If I were you I would stick it on Amazon at £159.99 and drop it by £5-£10 every week until it sold. Plus with Amazon no fees until it sells.
My assumptions are it is unopened and all accessories etc are stll sealed. It also has the 28-90mm lens. These retail at about £200 currently but I doubt they sell very fast.
I would expect you to get somewhere in the region of £130-£140 on Amazon. If you are in a hurry sell on EBay and expect about £110-£125.
In your listing tell people how you received the camera a story always helps.0 -
What's your location? My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
I'd go for the college route, LA. When I studied photography we had to learn on SLRs - it's no good going all posh with digi if you don't know the basics! You may even find the college itself will buy it off you. What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about? :eek:Official "Bring back Mark and Lard NOW! or else (please)" Member 160

HI just my 2p worth
What about camera clubs in area? I know my local one a lot of members hate digital cameras - I have an SLR and a digi (or 3
) my local one starts up around September time and maybe someone near you might be looking in clubs, or alternatively, do camera magazines have for sale parts nowadays? Haven't seen a camera mag for several years I must admit so they may / not have them nowadays. 0 -
I seem to recall Amateur Photographer charging quite a lot of money to advertise your stuff for sale, so I'd try a free-ad paper first.0

Hintza.......
The Eos 300x has been replaced by the eos3000v with 28-90mm lens.....Cost??? £140 BRAND NEW!
Secondhand values....??....As an example ....the NIKON F5 is arguably THE best Pro SLR camera ever made....costing £1200 + new ( body only ). They now go for around the £300 mark on eBay ( non-professional useage) ...so I somehow doubt that Looking Ahead is going to get anywhere near the £110-125 mark for a begiiner's amateur SLR kit. There's only 1 on eBay right now.......and not even reached £28 with 3 days to go...
The lens is also the series III which is the lower end quality and worth no more than £20-30 tops on a good day.
None of this is said to depress the OP.........but I'd like to think I know a fair bit about cameras and their values.......and to expect £110+ for an outmoded model in an outdated field ( SLR ) is optimistic in the extreme.
If he/she does reach that figure...then I'm out buying all the 300x 's I can ...and hitting eBay big style...:-)

Mike
You could be right but a quick check of EBay sales (second hand) shows them breaking the £100 mark (not too many sold). A quick search of pricerunner showed them retailing at £199 (I know these prices can be total bo**ocks).
Hence my suggestion of starting around the £150-£160 mark and reducing each week. I think your pricing is a little pessimistic but one caveat I have noticed some prices coming down very fast especially on slightly older digital compact models in the past month.0 -
Hintza.trust me on this!
I've been selling slr cameras / accessories for some while......and the market is on its proverbial !!!!!!! LOL...except for the very top end...and a Canon eos 300x is very definitely NOT top end quality. There's no such thing as a bad Canon camera...but the 300X is lower end and not desirable.
The problem the OP has is that the price for his/her camera will drop all the time...it doesn't matter tuppence to someone that it's new and unused and still in its box...the problem is it's still old technology ( built in Japanese obsolence! ).
No harm pitching it at £140/£150...............but ask yourself would you buy a secondhand camera ( cos it is...and the warranty is running out day by day.........) when you can get the updated version of that camera brand new and guaranteed 12 months for the same price?

Thanks very much to everyone who has replied to my original question, sorry I have not responded to it for the last couple of days.
I have though placed an advert in my local regional college where they do a full time photography course and I have mentioned it to my work colleague who is in a photography club so I will see what happens over the next month or so (if anything).
To the person who asked my location: Peterborough, Cambs.
Mike you make a good point about the camera being second hand and you are right, I have to ask myself what I would pay for this technology. So all your words have been taken on board.
I will have to see what happens over the next month or so then make a decision if I just let it go for a small amount of money or have it cluttering up the house if I don't get back into photography myself (which is not looking likely at the moment! )
Thanks again all who contributed. :TBank Balance: In the black for the moment.
