Hello
Any help welcome...
Have formatted a 2004 dell PC now has fresh XP Pro on , have then downloaded all drivers the Dell website recommends using my laptop, downloaded SP2 and installed that first on the Dell , then installed Dell drivers in the correct order as it says on the Dell website , but i attach my ethernet cable from my Laptop into the Dell , but it just wont open up the net ,at the moment the PC is fresh and nothing has been tempered with etc , so i just dont know how to sort out the internet.....am with virgin broadband , and usually if i plug into another laptop/PC i can get on line no problems
any help very welcome!!
Thanks

In Control Panel, System, Hardware, does the network interface show as a device, and is it shown as working normally, or does it have an error code?0
-
just an extra bit of info , in the LAN icon on the bottom right , if you click on it it says the network has not allocated an IP address so i have limited or no connectivity...0

Hi , when i click on `network adapters` and expand i have Intel R pro /100 ve network connection and thats it..under that i do have a yellow ? under `other devices` and called universal serial bus USB controller0
-
although i have just `updated ` driver on that and USB hub is now installed and the yellow ? has gone...0

i attach my ethernet cable from my Laptop into the Dell
This doesn't look right. You're connecting the desktop PC to your laptop - which presumably already has (wireless?) access to the Internet?
That normally won't work, unless you enable "Internet connection sharing" on the laptop. It's more conventional to just plug the desktop PC into a spare Ethernet port on your ADSL modem/router.0 -

what i mean is , ethernet cable is running from virgin modem/router into my laptop which is what i am using to download drivers etc onto flash drive , then i take it out of the laptop and plug it inton the PC Tower (the Dell)
no wireless anywhere mate0 -
Oh Ok - I read it slightly differently than you meant!
It's odd - looks like the adapter is failing to get an IP address from the router via DHCP.
Have you tried running the new network connection wizard (or whatever it's called - been a while since I last used Windows)?0 -
VM cable?
You only have one lead?
If one lead, reboot modem/router each time you reconnect.
Your router is getting confused.
Perhaps.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
To help your understanding ;
What spud17 is saying is that the script in the Virgin router knows it's legally allowed to give your lappie what it wants, but, the modem correctly assumes your PC connection is a thief !
Do what spud17 says, unplug just the power lead from the modem, wait two minutes, plug it back in, it will download a new 48 hour licence, when the lights on the modem settle down put the Ethernet end in your PC and it will just work.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
