A little known fact...
The first testicular guard was used in cricket in 1874
and the first cricket helmet was used in 1974.
100 years for men to realise that their brains could also be important ...

You first bike? Buy something middleweight, without a full fairing.
Why not a full fairing? Because you will drop it, at a standstill, normally while everyone is watching you. This is expensive.
TO be honest, buy a cheap but tidy bandit 600, run it for six months, get as many miles under your belt as possible, until you feel really confident on it then sell it for what you paid for it, and buy the bike you want.
Helmets, always buy the one that fits the best. If its the cheapest, hurrah! If its a £500 Arai, you are allowed to wince as you pull you wallet out.
Absolutely concur. Don't bother with a 125. A 600 will only go as fast as you want it to0 -
All good advice, however after 20 odd years riding 30K + miles a year I can guarantee that when you walk into the showroom and see that shiney bike all the advice here will go out the window!

I was a born again rider at 50 after 30 years out of the saddle. Joined the local IAM bike club whose first priority was to keep me safe, but social side, off road riding and seeing how to make "excellent progress" dismissed any suspicions that they might be a bit boring. I remember being told I'd be bored too quickly by a 500, so bought a Bandit 600 and loved it. Also I bought leathers but changed to textile clothing with armour in the lining. Leather is mighty hot in summer and too chilly in winter for me. Just turn up at their meeting and glean some face to face advice.0

I would have waited until spring. R6 is a quick steering bike and not what I would recommended for an inexperienced rider but good for you - enjoy your early christmas present."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I would have to agree with the others. I passed my test 7 years ago and got an sv650s which was more than enough for road riding and fun weekends. and as its a decent vtwin it could give you all the power you needed until you have the experience to go along with the bigger bikes. As for gear have a look out for stuff in the mags that you fancy and check to see if the dealer you get the bike from (if its a dealer) will give you a bt of a discount on gear if you get it from them also.
got about 100 or so quid off my leathers when I bought my zx6r and about 30 quid of my boots. as for helmets. used to go for agv, shark etc but after getting an arai I will never go back... so comfortable and has been tested after a merc tried to take me out with a sideswipe last month. but as the others say your either an arai or a shoei but anything thats got the eu approved markings will be fine as long as it fits well.0 -
